Tangram Solutions & Symply: A SAN solution for demanding Media production workflows
Fri 07, 06 2019
A solution that facilitates a collaborative workflow speeding up processes necessary for complex projects
When Drago Broadcast Services, part of Grupo Secuoya, required a high performance Fibre Channel Shared Storage System they turned to Tangram Solutions and Symply. Thanks to the performance and resilience of the hardware and reliability of the software it runs (Quantum StorNext ®on Linux CentOS 7), Symply ensures they never have to turn away work or risk missing deadlines again.
The challenge was to give high-speed access to artists who perform Parallel Real-Time colour correction and colour grading, while giving access to the same materials for Quality Control or file delivery to customers.
Due to the demanding formats used, the system needed to offer high transfer rate ratios, so that the play-outs and editing in 2K and 4K were fluid, allowing the artists to carry out their projects in the most efficient way. An advantage of Symply is its cross-platform compatibility allowing any OS and tools. Meaning no need to change the operator’s workflow as it is easily integrated in to the existing processes.
In the words of Raúl Pino Vaquerizo, Secuoya Group Operations Director, “Today the formats are evolving in such a way that the quality of the images improves continuously to meet the users’ demands and, therefore, our needs of working with increasingly larger files, is becoming one of the important issues to consider in any installation”. Symply makes installation future proof, by allowing not only scaling-up storage capacity to several PB, but fully scaling-out by increasing the system’s bandwidth. The possibility to scale to over 35GB/s throughput while maintaining the same low latency, eliminates any worries of not being able to meet the Audiovisual Industry future demands.
Due to the increasingly high amount of data stored in a single volume it was essential to have an additional security layer. Symply has a patented RAID structure providing virtual protection against multiple hard drive failures in multiple RAID sets with no data loss and allows an accelerated drive rebuild, thus reducing the possibility of cascading drive failure.
Tangram installed a 600TB Infortrend NAS with 40Gb Ethernet interfaces, offering sufficient capacity to store all the Raw assets and act as a common repository for their different departments: ingest, low-res transcoding, editing and postproduction. The NAS is also used to keep online copies of materials, this data is then automatically backed up on to an LTO Tape library following pre-set policies, and these assets can then be transported and archived outside the facilities. This is easily achieved by having a single centralised NAS storage unit.
The SAN configuration consists of the main server (SymplyULTRA) linked to a complementary one (SymplyIO) that provides additional processing and bandwidth to the system. This is in combination with two expansions, increasing transfer rates and storage capacity to reach the nearly 400 TB of storage required, and up to 6GB/s aggregate transfer rates.
Tangram Solutions priority was the optimization of their workflow to eliminate any bottle necks that are critical in these types of production environments. Symply facilitated collaborative workflow allowing different users to work with the same materials simultaneously, speeding up the processes necessary to address these complex projects.
