Being sold too

This article originally appeared in the IABM Journal, issue 101 which is available to view online here Richard Friedel Executive Vice President and General Manager, Fox Networks Richard Friedel, executive vice president and general manager of Fox Networks Engineering & Operations, joined Fox more than 20 years ago following stint at NBC News, ABC and prior to that, at Washington NBC affiliate, WRC-TV – his first professional television job. Over those years, he has seen remarkable advances in technology – and been on the receiving end of countless sales pitches from hopeful vendors. We spoke to Dr Rob Oldfield, Co-Founder and Director of Salsa Sound – who took advantage of Start-Up membership this year – about his experiences in getting his new venture off the ground, and asked him for his advice to other entrepreneurs on how to get started and get noticed in the broadcast and media industry. Give us a brief overview of what inspired you to set up your own company – where do you see the opportunity in the market, and why? At Salsa Sound we are producing technologies for the automation and enhancement of audio mixes for live sports audio, making the experience more cinematic, engaging and immersive for viewers. Having originally developed this technology as part of...

The Roles of AES67 and SMPTE ST 2110 in the Production World

Montgomery Scott (Star Trek) famously said, “You’ve got to use the right tool for the job, lad.” This session takes this lesson to heart. Patrick Killianey (Network Applications Engineer, Yamaha Commercial Audio Division) examines the needs of audio and video separately, discussing how open standards represent different opportunities to each trade and how they cooperate with private solutions – each being the “right tool” in different situations. Simple network infrastructure structural models are also be shown that lend themselves to quick maintenance by the teams that operate the A/V systems.
