5G is one of key technologies that has the potential to revolutionise both the creation and delivery of broadcasting in the future. For several years, broadcasters have been making innovating use of 3G and 4G network connectivity to achieve mobile broadcasting that was a dream only a few years ago. However, this has always been very much a best efforts game even with some very technically creative ways of creating required bandwidth and resilience. The promise of 5G is fantastic very high bandwidth, the option of guaranteed Quality of Service, dynamic Software Defined connectivity. This potential needs to be proven and trials are already underway to investigate the real-world performance that is realisable. There is then the question of the inherent capabilities being exposed and made available by operators. This presentation examines the potential, the trials and the practicalities of their promising technology.
