Understanding the Broadcast and Media Industry
Overview
This course will increase your knowledge and understanding of the broadcast and media industry and the technology and jargon it uses along with the main business and operational models in this sector. It’s ideal for new entrants to the industry as it helps to build insight and understanding into what makes the industry they have joined work. Even if you have worked in the industry for a while you will gain an understanding of the “bigger picture” and where your company’s products, services, customers or audience fit.
Duration
Usually structured as a two-day informal presentation and discussion with an industry-expert trainer. It is possible to buy just one day and have this run as part of your company’s induction or on-boarding program. Can be custom delivered onsite with a minimum of six participants. Part 1 - How Television Works
Module 1 – Broadcasting Today
What is broadcasting, why do we do it, and how do we fund it? Broadcasting and content production, types of content, production genres. The evolution of the industry and the technology behind it.
Module 2 – Technology Basics
What is audio and video? How they are originated and carried as signals and files. How much data is generated? The broadcast chain - camera and mic to viewer - the data flow. Key technologies: compression and codecs, TV formats, SD, HD, UHD. Old and new ways the industry thinks about the technology of broadcasting.
Module 3 – Making Programmes
Ways of producing TV programmes: Live events; sport, music, entertainment. Non-live production. News. Locations, people, production facilities, how consumer products are changing professional practices.
Module 4 – Managing Content
Production workflows, post-production, asset management systems and metadata - the broadcast production chain. Media storage.
Part 2 - How the Television Business Works
Module 1 – Delivery to the Consumer
Delivery platforms - traditional, IP and cloud. Localization and content replacement, age demographics and viewing habits.
Module 2 – Broadcaster / End User Business
Platform types / deliver models: DTC, PayTV / MVPD, Aggregated TV. Business fundamentals, broadcaster business models, income and expenditure. Implications of the multi-platform world.
Module 3 – Supplier Business
Supply chains: Technology and Content, types of supply business, how the supply side serves the broadcast and & media business.
Module 4 – The Future
Trends: 4K, 8K, HDR, HFR, 5G, IP and the cloud, remote production. What comes next: Enablers and drivers, rate of change, the next ten years.
