BaM Census - Benchmarking the industry

This Census was carried out in partnership with Rise, a group for women in broadcast, and IABM, the international trade association for broadcast and media technology suppliers.

The Census ranged across every sector of Broadcast and Media in every country asking:

  • How is our industry actually made up – age, gender, ethnicity? 
  • What roles are which people fulfilling?
  • What effects has Covid-19 had on jobs?
  • Do we have the right offer for young people?

Highlights include:

  • More than 80% of the Broadcast & Media industry have white ethnicity
  • Females in the industry tend to be younger than males
  • Males are more likely to be involved in the Audio and Immersive sectors
  • Older males are overrepresented among Media Technology Vendors
  • Females tend to be freelancers / self-employed
  • CEO & CTO tend to be males
  • Social mobility is higher among younger people, particularly females, who do marketing/PR/consulting or freelancing/self-employed
