Emphasis on Innovation for News, Sports, and Cloud Production Bridges Current and Future Live Broadcast Workflows

MELVILLE, N.Y. — Sept. 15, 2023 — Celebrating its 57th year in business, Chyron returns to IBC for the first time since 2019. With strong year-over-year fiscal growth, including a 9% increase in recurring revenue, the company is well-positioned for the future. To support continued growth as well as successfully serve existing customers, the company has invested in a year-over-year staff increase of 8%, largely focused on research and development.

“Our focus is forward-thinking, helping customers achieve their story-telling goals by utilizing the full range of our portfolio, and the full functionality of our flexible, scalable platforms,” said Mike Truex, president of Chyron. “We need to meet every customer where they are, but also address their goals for the future, including cloud workflows, AI efficiencies, and data visualization.”

In Hall 7 of the RAI, booth A.45, Chyron is showcasing live production workflows for sports and news, along with its cloud-native all-in-one production powerhouse, Chyron LIVE. Core elements of Chyron’s news portfolio are also visible on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) booth, Hall 5, booth C.90. PRIME CG (graphics) and CAMIO (graphics-NRCS integration) have been selected to be shown as part of the AWS cloud production for news workflow.

“Chyron is proud to partner with AWS alongside several other vendors to demonstrate a fully cloud-based news workflow,” said Mathieu Yerle, senior vice president of strategy. “This highlights our commitment to developing truly cloud-native products, going beyond a mere ‘lift and shift’ of on-premises products to the cloud. It is important to offer our customers the very best that the cloud has to offer for live production.”

New at IBCShown for the first time at this IBC, PRIME 4.9 (graphics), Paint 9.6 (illustrated replay), and Weather 2.0 are on display as beta versions.

PRIME 4.9 focuses on optimized performance and continued commitment to fast, efficient data management at every point in the graphics workflow. Ensuring critical recovery and enhancing overall performance, auto-bypass in the case of a hardware failure may now be implemented directly from the user interface (UI). Support for load-balanced proxy output for non-critical workflows offers a choice to display fewer frames in preview to conserve memory resources. The GPU Texture Memory Preview offers improved texture caching to accommodate more and larger clip files.

A key new feature with PAINT 9.6 is multi-angle telestration. The presenter may telestrate the video from one camera, but with this new feature, the telestration can appear automatically on video from other cameras showing the same event. Broadening capabilities for how PAINT content is presented to audiences, users can now easily select a pre-configured “skin” from a dropdown menu. The skin determines what aspects of the UI are visible to the viewer and how they are arranged. There is also a Presentation Window that allows users two options: one with the UI and one with only the telestrated video without the UI tools.

PAINT 9.6 includes a host of new features that offer more advanced analysis tools inspired by requests from top-tier analysts who know their game, new features that add ease of use for the operator, and additional presentation options for audience engagement. PAINT has previously included a Cut Out Tool, allowing analysts to cut out a player from the live video and move that player elsewhere on the playing surface. For more advanced use of the Cut-Out Tool, it is now possible to use it within a live preview of the video and to add keyframing, placing the cut out player in more than one position over time. For further illustrative storytelling, the user now has a host of Cursor Tools at their disposal. These include the Cursor Ball Tool, which can create balls (or, in the case of hockey, a puck) for any of eight different sports; the XO tool, which can create an X or an O, helpful for showing positions or formations; and a Zoom Circle tool, which creates a zoom on the ball. In addition to these various object and positional indicators, PAINT now allows the analyst to highlight an entire region on the pitch, field, or other playing surface.

Chyron WEATHER 2.0 makes its beta version debut with this IBC. Based on a modernization of the 2021 acquisition of DTN Weather Suite, Chyron WEATHER 2.0 promises easy-to-use creation and presentation tools coupled with weather data flexibility, sleek design options and integration with CAMIO, Chyron’s robust MOS-newsroom integration system.

Efficient, Mixer-Free News WorkflowsAlso seen in beta release at this IBC is CAMIO 5.4. Highlighting Chyron’s commitment to cloud production and to ensuring that CAMIO is as NRCS agnostic as possible, the 5.4 release of CAMIO offers integration with Seven Mountains DiNA, a fully cloud-based NRCS with an on-premises gateway. CAMIO 5.4 also includes new asset management efficiency and quality features including watch folder ingest logic, exportable folder content lists, a file size meter displayed prior to file transfers, user-defined asset deletion, and purge preferences across a hub-and-spoke ecosystem.

Delivering on the promise of total newsroom-to-air efficiency, CAMIO can drive not only graphical overlays (CG graphics) but also video walls, virtual sets, weather segments, and now even camera cues for an efficient, mixer-free workflow. For users desiring more complex vision mixer functionality within their mixer-free workflow, Chyron PRIME has long offered robust DVE functionality, such as a full-screen squeeze back to a 2-box. Like any PRIME graphics, cues for graphics with DVE effects may easily be added to the NRCS rundown via CAMIO. Top-tier Chyron experts are on hand at IBC to help visitors explore their ideal mixer-free workflow.

All-In-One Cloud-Native Live ProductionChyron LIVE is a cloud-native, all-in-one live production application that includes broadcast-grade animated graphics, multi-camera vision mixing, clip playback, illustrated sports replay, and audio control, all from a single UI. Chyron LIVE is hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS) and has been developed according to AWS best practices. Users may log in from anywhere with internet access via a web browser, working solo or in distributed teams. As a SaaS offering, Chyron LIVE offers a much lower cost barrier to entry than traditional broadcast-grade hardware implementations of a similar feature set.

New features in the Chyron LIVE 1.5 Beta version, on display for the first time at IBC 2023 reflect the commitment to Chyron’s partnership with AWS for cloud-native development, especially for security in cloud production. Other new features are driven by improving the SaaS, remote workflow customer experience. Based on user feedback, there are also several new features that elevate Chyron LIVE’s handling of clips.

Security is emphasized in this release, including encryption for SRT streams, WebRTC commentary, RTMPS output, and alerts for input or assets that are not encrypted. Specifically, these features position Chyron LIVE for the AWS Foundational Technical Review (FTR). The FTR enables AWS partners, such as Chyron, to identify and remediate risks, promoting AWS Well-Architected.

Improving the SaaS and remote workflow experience, Chyron LIVE now offers self-service user activation of a Chyron LIVE production environment. Further, the UI now offers responsive design, allowing users to work from a desktop, laptop, or tablet, regardless of monitor size, and be able to see the entire UI.

“Since day one, Chyron has been a leading innovator in live broadcast production,” states Carol Bettencourt, vice president of marketing. “At IBC 2023, we are excited to share AI-driven sports replay, effective data storytelling — even with large quantities of data, cloud-native production — both with the all-in-one Chyron LIVE as well as with a more traditional CG-MOS-NRCS workflow, along many new efficiencies, including rapid edit access for PRIME playout operators, new time-saving shortcuts for sports analysts using PAINT, and mixer-less production, giving live rundown-driven production the same level of automation for camera switching as with MOS-driven graphics.”
