Rohde & Schwarz Unveils Real-Time Measurements for Next-Gen Bluetooth® Channel Sounding

Rohde & Schwarz is set to showcase the first real-time measurements on the upcoming new Bluetooth® signals tailored for Channel Sounding at the Embedded World Exhibition & Conference in Nuremberg, Germany. This demonstration will be conducted using the R&S CMW500 wideband radio communication tester, marking a significant advancement in consumer and commercial applications’ positioning accuracy.

Bluetooth® serves as the most extensively deployed technology for consumer and commercial devices with location determining capabilities. The forthcoming introduction of Channel Sounding is poised to revolutionize real-time location services, offering a remarkable accuracy of 50 cm or better. Apart from enhancing location precision, Channel Sounding is anticipated to be more power-efficient compared to existing Bluetooth® location services, while also providing enhanced security.

This advancement is particularly significant for indoor applications such as asset tracking in factory settings or warehouses, as well as for secure access to buildings or vehicles. To enable devices to support these enhanced location functions, hardware changes are required on Bluetooth® devices, introducing a new physical layer. Engineers gearing up to develop the necessary chips and devices urgently require reliable and precise measurements on the signals facilitating these new functions.

Rohde & Schwarz has already tailored options for its R&S CMW platform to support the corresponding RF physical layer measurements. The current draft of the next Bluetooth® Core Specification outlines support for phase-based ranging (PBR) tone exchange and round-trip time (RTT). To offer hardware and software engineers involved in Bluetooth® chipset and device development an early glimpse into the PBR measurement techniques, Rohde & Schwarz will host a session at the embedded world Conference titled “Redefining Bluetooth Low Energy Testing to Cover Latest Bluetooth Innovations” at 1:45 p.m. on April 10.

A live demonstration of these measurements will be presented at the Rohde & Schwarz booth 4-218 in hall 4 at the embedded world Exhibition in Nuremberg, Germany, from April 9 to 11, 2024.
