Rohde & Schwarz is developing a new automation suite option called R&S ZNrun for precise and time-saving compliance testing of the latest generation PCIe 5.0 and 6.0 cables and connectors in line with PCI-SIG specifications. This solution aims to significantly reduce testing times and minimize the risk of connection errors by test engineers.
The R&S ZNrun-K440 option is designed for fully automated verification of PCIe x8 cables. The software controls a setup consisting of the R&S ZNB vector network analyzer and the scalable R&S OSP switch matrix configuration, creating a multiport VNA solution with 64 test ports. This setup enables complete test runs with all Thru and crosstalk combinations, including metric calculations for Pass/Fail evaluations, to be completed within a few minutes. In contrast, manual testing typically takes several hours and carries a higher risk of errors.
The automated measurement process covers all measurements defined in the PCIe specification and includes a new calibration procedure that reduces the number of calibration steps and connections required. It also incorporates a method for de-embedding the test fixture, as required in the PCIe test specifications. The software provides a powerful test configurator, allowing test items to be selected and deselected by lane for greater flexibility in meeting customer needs.
With each iteration of the PCIe evolution, the transfer rate has doubled to meet the growing demand for speed. Data centers and cable manufacturers are adopting PCIe 5.0 and 6.0 cables to support high-speed data storage connections. To ensure compliance with PCIe requirements and system functionality, thorough testing is essential in R&D verification, compliance testing, and manufacturing processes.
The R&S ZNrun-K440 solution addresses the challenges associated with compliance verification of high-speed interconnects. It automates the testing process, significantly simplifying the extensive number of measurements required for each PCIe link. Pass/Fail verdicts are based on defined metrics, such as integrated return loss (iRL) and component contribution to integrated crosstalk noise (ccICN), which are calculated from the S-parameter results. The solution also covers standardized cables for internal and external PCIe applications.
Rohde & Schwarz is showcasing its new automated solution for PCIe 5.0 and 6.0 cable and connector compliance testing at the PCI-SIG Developers Conference from June 13 to 14, 2023. The R&S ZNrun-K440 option will be available soon and complements the existing compliance test software automation portfolio from Rohde & Schwarz.
