Rohde & Schwarz shows increased power and agility in video workflows at NAB

Tue 11, 04 2023

Rohde & Schwarz, a global leader in broadcast distribution and trusted partner in media solutions, is highlighting performance and productivity boosts in its media products at NAB2023 (booth N1949, Las Vegas Convention Center, 16 – 19 April). Alongside a major new product introduction, there are increased benefits across the range, matching the technology to the real-world demands of media professionals.

R&S®SpycerNode is widely recognized as a powerful and flexible storage system, and at NAB2023, it is joined by R&S®SpycerNode2, which sees a fresh approach to the core architecture to deliver important new functionality. Appreciating that it is increasingly used in busy post production facilities, the new design includes the ability to add solid-state caching stores, providing a very much faster response to network users for regularly used content.

To allow users to tailor capacities precisely to their requirements, R&S®SpycerNode2 now offers storage in blocks of 28 disk or SSD drives, up to a maximum of 84 drives in a single chassis, with up to four chassis under a single pair of controllers for a maximum of 6.7 petabytes.

The industry standard for creating file-based media deliverables, R&S®CLIPSTER 6 Mark 2 is 100% faster than previous models. As well as making multiple versions much more efficient, it has allowed the addition of important new functionality, not least in audio where Dolby and Atmos are now supported, along with real-time downmixing where required.

R&S®VENICE, the ingest to playout content store, also has enhanced functionality being seen for the first time at NAB2023. Highlights include addressing one of the key issues for broadcasters today: developing efficient workflows to ingest the contents of video tape libraries, which are in danger of becoming inaccessible.

Demonstrating that cloud playout is now commonplace, R&S playout automation, using Venice storage and Pixel Power Gallium automation management and StreamMaster video processing, will be shown managing multiple premium channels, hosted on the booth and in the AWS cloud.

Providing monitoring for the multi-channel playout will be the latest version of the R&S®PRISMON, the uniquely powerful networked multiviewer hosted entirely on COTS hardware. Bult for the real demands of today’s broadcast centers, it supports multiple I/O streams simultaneously, including ST2110, NDI, SRT and SDI. New for NAB is SDM (Scalable Distributed Multiviewing), which means displays can be created beyond the processing capabilities of a single unit by creating each (picture-in-picture) PiP only once and intelligently sharing them across the network.

“As we speak to broadcasters and media enterprises around the world, they all say the same things: they need to do more,” said James Gilbert, Director of Product Management at Rohde & Schwarz. “They have to handle bigger signals like 4k Ultra HD, they have to monitor more channels, they have to store, route and deliver more content to more destinations and they have to automate more channels. All our new developments at NAB2023 are focused around doing more, and achieving it without risking quality, reliability or resilience.”
