Love Productions streamlines post production workflows

Based in Los Angeles, Love Productions is an independent subsidiary of a leading UK production company with both entities specialising in unscripted content. Popular shows such as ‘The Great American Baking Show’’,’ ‘Singapore Social’, ‘Made in Mexico’ and many others air on major networks and streaming services including Netflix, Amazon and Facebook. Initially set up as a production office to develop U.S. shows back in 2013, as work expanded Love Productions decided to bring postproduction totally in-house. At that point, Head of Post Production Charlotte Pai was given the challenging task of researching and building the new facility from scratch.

Her primary concern was to discover the most efficient way of prepping the large volume of media associated with the unscripted genre across multiple projects for Avid-based editing. Charlotte explains, “We often need to juggle projects simultaneously. Each has its unique specifications so the pacing of prepping footage is different in every case. We were looking for an automation system to manage our media in a way that could accommodate our overlapping schedules, streamline operations and keep us on track.”

With that aim in sight, Charlotte set about her homework, researching available technologies, getting demonstrations and asking a lot of questions. “Root6 ContentAgent seemed a popular solution,” she continues, “But, to be frank, it looked too good to be true. As a key component in the operation, I needed to be 100% sure that it would fully accomplish our objectives and justify its price tag. I contacted LA neighbour Doc Shop Productions who’d already been using Root6 ContentAgent for a few years to automate a previously manual workflow. Doc Shop’s Post Production Supervisor Tim Cunningham assured me that they’d achieved massive time savings and eliminated human error by building a workflow based around Root6 ContentAgent’s automated ingest abilities for the transcoding of camera card media and metadata into Avid editorial. ”

Whether ingesting content into a Media Composer or into MediaCentral | Production Management environments, Root6 ContentAgent’s toolset is designed to save time, money and resources. As part of the automated workflow, the easy to use Root6 CardAgent user interface allows multiple non-technical operators to submit media for automated transcoding or wrapping for editorial. Once completed, editors can then similarly initiate the automation generation of proxies and required deliverables.

Love Productions installed Root6 ContentAgent in the spring of 2017 at a time of peak activity with multiple network shows in production with a variety of camera card types and transcode specifications.

“Root6 ContentAgent enables us to manage our media 24/7 with very little redundant manpower,” Charlotte continues. A process that would normally require considerable crew support and expertise is replaced with a central area of operation for all incoming media.

“It’s great for automating those mundane time-consuming tasks that come with prepping media for editorial, freeing up our project staff to concentrate on more important functions. Critically, it minimises the human error that often comes when dealing with large volumes of media.

“While having predictable operation obviously helps us stay on schedule it provides the additional advantage of being able to accurately budget for time and resources when starting a new project.”

ContentAgent software can be configured to increase efficiency and accuracy across a range of broadcast and postproduction applications. The options installed with ContentAgent at Love Productions include Root6 CardAgent, Avid MXF File Generator and Image Sequence, an option for transcoding media files generated by ARRI and RED cameras.

“We’re huge fans of the system,” concludes Charlotte. “and the technical support has been there in the few times we’ve needed it – I’d say we’ve had premium attention. The customisation of automated workflows has served us well on every project. From simplifying the ingest of a huge variety of file types and formats into editorial and streamlining the generation of deliverables, Root6 ContentAgent has made our lives so much easier that I couldn’t imagine operating post production without it!”

Q&A with Vidispine and Arvato Systems

        Erik Ahlin, Co-founder, Vidispine
Holger Noske, VP Broadcast Solutions, Arvato Systems

Why did you rebrand under the Vidispine name rather than Arvato Systems?

Holger: Arvato Systems is global IT powerhouse working across multiple industries from retail to utilities. With Vidispine, we have a well-known, well respected brand that is specifically targeted at media organizations and organizations using media to support their business. In bringing the portfolios together, it was important to us to maintain the value we have in both brands, hence Vidispine, an Arvato Systems brand.

Erik: I think what I would add to that is that we did look at all the options. As far as possible, we started with a blank piece of paper and looked at all the possible options. Of course, rebranding the Vidispine portfolio under Arvato Systems would have been the obvious path to take, but I the obvious path isn’t always the right one and the team here looked at all the options in detail, and this was the result. If I remember we started with 7 or 8 possible scenarios in the beginning, before cutting that down to 3 before settling on Vidispine as the right way to go.

Arvato Systems bought Vidispine three years ago. Was a merging of brands always planned? Why have you decided to do this now?

Erik: To be honest, at the time of the acquisition, we were far more excited/focused about the possibilities and opportunities in bringing our technologies together – our top priority has always been on innovating and delivering solutions to our customers. Over the past 3 years the portfolios have grown closer together and at some point, it just gets a bit confusing with the two brands.

Holger: If you look at a lot of acquisitions, the first thing that happens is that the sales team get forced together, then there’s a rebrand, and somewhere down the line, the technology actually gets integrated and the portfolio truly brought together. That certainly wasn’t the direction we wanted to take, and actually, at the time of the acquisition, we had already started integrating the technology. What we knew, is that we wanted to achieve two things from the acquisition. First, to build a class-leading enterprise media asset management system for both new and existing customer in the media & entertainment industry. Second, to build a cross-industry content platform that, with our own IP or together with partners, we can deliver solutions to different industries where video and other content is also now supporting business. As we’ve continued down that track. at some point, bringing the portfolio together under one brand just seemed the natural next step.

What does the Vidispine brand mean to both of you? What message does it convey?

Erik: Well at a very literal level, it’s “Vidi – spine” – a backbone for video (and other media) and that fits very well with the unified portfolio. When Vidispine, the company, was founded in 2009, we really aimed to always be spear-heading the market and be pragmatic in building solutions and empowering our customers. When we started discussing the acquisition with Arvato Systems, this was one of the “obvious fit” signs, with the Bertelsmann essentials of “creativity” and “entrepreneurship”.

Holger: At the time of the acquisition, Vidispine really represented a number of values we were keen to bring up in Broadcast Solutions too, for example, the “start-up” vibe and being ahead of the curve in terms of what the market is doing. Even as Vidispine has grown in the time since, those values have been maintained and influenced the Broadcast Solutions team a great deal.

How does this merging of the brands help your customers?

Holger: For existing customers, there will be very little change – we will still strive to offer the best solutions and services on the market. There will be no changes to how they receive support or the project teams they work with. Obviously, with the portfolio coming together, and some product names changing, they may some visual differences in future software updates and potentially some changes to things like release numbering as we bring that in line. As touched on earlier, we have already integrated our technologies and, for example, our enterprise media asset management customers can take advantage of scale-out media services with VidiNet – the rebrand doesn’t change that, but it does make it much clearer as to which portfolio elements now fit together and where.

We invest a lot in our community with regular user group events and this is something we want to focus on going forward too. Unfortunately, we won’t hold any “in person” events this year, but activities that support our community of users, developers and partners form a significant part of our plans going forward.

Erik: For new or potential customers and partners, coming to us for the first time, it’s a little bit different. These changes will make it a much easier portfolio to understand and explore. Of course, it also means a single contact point. Especially in the wake of all the tradeshows and events etc being cancelled, and with no face-to-face meetings for the time being, making sure that our audience can understand and see how our technology can benefit their business is really important – we’re now in a much stronger position to enable that.

TV3 uses TVU Anywhere app to connect fans remotely to major live football game

TVU Networks, the global technology and innovation leader in live IP solutions, announced that Televisió de Catalunya’s (TV3) ‘Minut a Minut’ sports television program successfully relied on TVU’s mobile transmitter app TVU Anywhere to simultaneously host more than 25 football fans globally in a virtual talk show during a two hour live broadcast on their channel Esport3. The program’s panelists were able to engage in live video exchanges with fans in full HD picture quality and with minimal delay.

“The TVU Anywhere transmissions ran flawlessly throughout the broadcast, which was especially important when switching between the numerous live fans,” reported Daniel Barcon, Director of ESport3 at TV3. “We had full control to activate, deactivate and set the time period of validity for the multiple accounts, which was very reassuring. The ease of the technical setup, as well as the functionality of the TVU Anywhere app for participants allowed people from a variety of different backgrounds to connect with each other over their passion for football.”

This connection was made possible with TVU Anywhere’s intuitive token-based user management, fans were simply provided with a QR code to pair their mobile device to a remote TVU Server. TVU Anywhere is a smartphone app that aggregates cellular data, with H.265 encoding and patented IS+ transmission algorithm. It allows anyone to transmit high-quality live video footage to broadcasters and TV studios, securing high and reliable bandwidth by aggregating both cellular and home internet connection.

“We are honored to have TV3 place their trust in using the TVU Anywhere app to bring the fan experience to a whole new level with this global football event,” says Paul Shen, CEO, TVU Networks. “During this critical time, it is rewarding to see TVU’s innovations playing an important role in helping our global media partners continue to create and deliver programs to their audiences.”

TVU Networks is offering TVU Anywhere, as well as other turnkey solutions free of charge to media organizations and government agencies until May 31st.

TVU Project Pool Feed Helps Share Live Government Press Conferences

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.—In an effort to support all local communities nationally during the COVID-19 pandemic, TVU Networks has been working with news stations and municipal government offices across the country to set up free local live video pool feeds through its Project Pool Feed. Using the free TVU Anywhere app on a mobile phone, municipal officials and spokespersons can share live video to the pool feed by simply pressing the “live” button. No training is required to use TVU Anywhere because of its intuitive interface.

“As local government officials need a reliable way too quickly and effectively communicate vital information regarding efforts to combat COVID-19, TV stations are a critical outlet for this effort,” explained Paul Shen, CEO, TVU Networks. “We at TVU have been assisting communities nationally with Project Pool Feed. In using our tools, local municipal government offices can easily run news conferences while respecting the requirements of social distancing.”

For example, Georgia Public Broadcasting has an agreement with TV stations in the Atlanta market to provide a pool feed of the coronavirus task force briefings from Governor Brian Kemp. Powered by TVU Grid, Atlanta-based GPB is also working to share content with stations across the state as well as some parts of South Carolina.

TVU Grid is connected to a network of thousands of Grid-enabled broadcasters around the world. TV stations use TVU’s Grid technology for receiving, sharing and distributing live video content such as from a pool feed. Through Project Pool Feed, broadcasters coordinate with local governments to accept TVU Anywhere content from press conferences and other events for distribution.

Live Streaming 2020 – Shifting Consumer Habits

Innovative developments in live streaming technologies, along with significant investments into broadband capabilities, have set the industry standard for the modern TV experience. Immersive and compelling content is now expected for most live and on-demand events, offering an experience that is comparable to ‘being there’.

        Remote/At-Home Production

Demand for coverage of live events, particularly sports, is at an all-time high. For broadcasters, delivering this level of content is an increasing challenge; but even more so at a time when budgets are being squeezed and the environmental impact of operations are being continually scrutinized. This is leading many to turn to remote or at-home production techniques.
