A key building block of Nevion’s virtualization strategy, Nevion Virtuoso is a software-defined media node platform, designed to perform a variety of real-time media transport, processing, and monitoring in both LANs (e.g. facilities) and WANs (e.g. contribution). Its functionality is upgradable and configurable through software, known as media function virtualization. It is standards based and ready to be deployed rapidly in a modern NMOS and ST 2110 environment, as well as a more traditional SDI setting.
Nevion Virtuoso is the culmination of over 20 years of Nevion experience in the media and broadcasting industry, and 15 years delivering IP solutions. It is being used in applications as diverse as IP in the facilities, contribution, remote production and DTT, by broadcasters and service providers across the world, including TV2 (Norway), Plazamedia (Germany), Portugal Telecom, ALTICE (Portugal), Synterra Media (Russia), as well as large media organizations in the US and Asia.
Nevion Virtuoso is all about the software, or Media Functions.
Since it was first launched at IBC 2016, Nevion Virtuoso has undergone regular software updates, enhancing and increasing its functionality. Nevion Virtuoso’s Media Functions now number over 50, designed to handle all of the challenges associated with IP-based, live production environments in which the distinction between local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs), used in contribution, remote production and distribution) is becoming blurred.
These Media Functions include:
- video & audio processing (embedding/de-embedding; audio routing, shuffling, delay and gain; clean switching)
- transport adaption (SDI / ST 2110 / ST 2022-6)

Uniquely amongst software-defined media nodes, the Nevion Virtuoso platform has been designed to allow for the provision of Media Servers (appliances) with different characteristics, such as size, number of Media Accelerators they can accommodate and level of modularity, in order to suit virtually any requirement.
Centrally managing Nevion Virtuosos in the field could not be simpler – thanks to Nevion VideoIPath orchestration and SDN management software. Nevion VideoIPath can be used to set-up Media Functions on the Nevion Virtuosos (in a plan and organized way), route signals to and from Media Functions on any Nevion Virtuoso in the media network, and the appliances in the network.
Virtuoso also supports NMOS IS-04 and IS-05.

Managing broadcast contribution
With Nevion VideoIPath, the production team can set-up contribution links between locations on their own, both in a planned and ad-doc manner. Users just select the source and destination(s), pick the profile needed (e.g. what type of compression and protection to use), set the date and time(s), and let Nevion VideoIPath manage all the underlying complexity.
Planning broadcast workflows
Nevion VideoIPath allows production planners to design workflows, well ahead of events or shows. All the connectivity, media-flows, processing and salvos can be planned and tested graphically, without needing to worry about the physical aspects of the network. When the production needs to take place, the pre-configured workflow can be set-up at the touch of a button.
Controlling broadcast workflows
In a live-production environment, the team in the gallery can continue to use familiar control panels, thanks to Nevion VideoIPath’s support for industry-standard interfaces. Nevion VideoIPath also offers a touch-screen panel that can run on computers and tablets. So the production team can work as they always have done, even as the underlying media network evolves.
Architecting the network
Nevion VideoIPath is the solution to network architects’ network management and control headache. Nevion VideoIPath supports both centralized and distributed architectures; automatic routing, SDN, and hybrids; media and data; and IP LANs and WANs. Nevion VideoIPath also manages bandwidth, ports and other capacity issues.
Running the network
Nevion VideoIPath provides advanced monitoring and fault-recovery capabilities, enabling support operations to a ensure service continuity. These capabilities include graphical alarm management, root cause detection, historical logs, and network to service correlation, as well as manual and automatic re-routing.
Maintaining the network
Nevion VideoIPath makes it easy for operations to set-up and manage the installed base, for example by enabling planned maintenance of equipment, and the roll-out of software and firmware upgrades. VideoIPath enables operations to identify services affected, and re-route them proactively.
