Fast Data Transferring | a Critical Factor in Life Science
Right now the world unites on a single topic, that research needs to increase and continue to develop in order to fight the ferocious virus COVID-19. With cases rising, researchers are battling projected timelines and global pressure to find vaccines, cures and treatments. What isn’t publicly spoken about is the need to share data at real-time speeds to assist in the research, collaboration, sharing, analysis, clinical trials, of this highly sought after data.
2020 has shone a spotlight on the life science industry and why it requires advanced technology, but today we are going to dissect the necessity to acquire a fast data transfer solution.

Impatience Is Not a Virtue…
Globally, people are becoming increasingly frustrated with forecasted timelines. In a world of instant gratification, we at least expect a solution on the horizon. Instead, we face many unknowns when it comes to this particular virus. Just when we begin to think it is fading, spikes occur and alarms are raised. One certainty is that if researchers fail to cross-collaborate, timelines for solutions will only lengthen. The right data transfer solution will excel the process of collaboration. If we want the freedom to shake hands, hold in-person meetings, and travel to conferences, we need the industry to make the right choices in technology. If your company is still using FTP you are not helping to speed up the process of research collaboration. With solutions like FileCatalyst, researchers will have the ability to monitor their transfers and collaborate globally to ensure they are truly sharing their research as fast as possible.
Reliability Can Mean Life or Death…
Many organizations continue to waste countless hours of valuable time and resources creating complex transfer procedures. These tedious, repetitive jobs can create bottlenecks in organizational processes. They proceed down this path due to a lack of reliability in their file transferring solution. In the present time of COVID-19, this is literally costing lives around the world. There are fast data transferring solutions that can rapidly change the process of your company’s transferring method. FileCatalyst ensures the security and integrity of data with transfer methods and security features that are fully HIPPA compliant. With a reliable solution that can reach multi-gigabit speeds, medical research workflows can become exponentially faster, more secure and more reliable.
No Need to Trim the Fat…
Other industries can only imagine the size of the data that life sciences produce. From multiple terabyte ultra high def microscopic imagery to full genomic sequences taking up hundreds of gigabytes, this crucial information creates massive datasets. It is projected that the amounts of data the industry produces will grow exponentially. Visual Capitalist predicts that in 2021 the global life science market will increase to almost $25 billion, this will create an explosion in big data. The industry will further explore predictive health intelligence and other various smart tactics to advance productivity. Using out of date data transferring methods will slow these methods down. Solutions need to be explored to cut your transfer times in half, not your data. When the right data transfer solution is selected you can transfer millions of files in seconds.
2020 is a year of alteration, a year of learning and year of growth. The life sciences industry understands that big data will play a role in their workflows now more than ever. If your company is behind on their transferring processes, now is the time to come up to speed. Time is a precious commodity, there is no need to waste it.

How Large Files Will Affect Your Transferring Process | Tips on How to Manage
We are living beyond the “future” according to Marty McFly and Doc Brown. In the year 2020 we have many different formats of media files. The question we want to answer is what do today’s typical media files look like and what is coming down the pipeline over the next several years.
When it comes to transferring large media files it’s important to understand the currently popular types of large formats and the challenges that come along with them. When working with these large files you want to have the ability to transfer them efficiently and at full-line speeds. Some solutions may force you to compress your files or send them piece by piece. This can result in lost time and data. While compression has a time and place in the released production, it is much more beneficial for the creators to work on uncompressed files during the development of a project. It’s crucial that the professional creators within the media and production industry, research and find the right solution to fit their needs. Listed below are the current most common media formats as well as how large of a format they are. This will give you a better understanding of how much data one project entails and how much data you would transfer at once.

As we continue to move forward with the development of impressive media formats, new technologies to combat productions will appear. This means updated devices, products and software will creep onto our shelves and into our carts. Similar to how the DVD player demolished the VHS in the early 2000s. To keep up with the advancements, you too will need to purchase these tools. Luckily, when it comes to transferring your large video files, there are solutions that will grow with you. FileCatalyst can send millions of files simultaneously at 10Gbps.
The next conversation on the horizon is 12K. At the moment, you will have a difficult time coming across 12K produced videos. This is mainly due to the process of the technology growth and it not yet being fully available to the average creator. However, footage can be produced by using several 8K cameras or a modelled camera that has extended resolution options (if you can manage to get your hands on one.) Ultimately 12K footage is 48.5 times larger than HD resolution and the quality is out of this world. As we look towards the future we can truly appreciate the lines of Marty Mcfly, “I guess you guys aren’t ready for that yet. But your kids are gonna love it.”

Why Are Video Files Supersized in 2020?
There are many factors at hand when creating media content in 2020. Creators are at a point where HD doesn’t hit the high standards mark, and people are always seeking the best possible result when it comes to media content quality. With this in mind, when moulding your development plan, you need to take into account the size of the video files you will be creating and how you will transfer them globally to your team and audiences.
It’s safe to say that if you are diving into this blog post, you are a creator. The purpose of this post is to provide new or extended information to creators within the broadcast industry. We want to highlight the continuous increase in video file sizes as well as solutions on how to manage this growth without losing quality or data. Let’s bust the myth that you need to compress your video files before transferring them. There are solutions available within the broadcast industry that allow you to utilize your large video files, even when working within a remote production team. Today we will dissect what goes into the swelling of these video files and how you can estimate the size of your project and its transfer time.
Video Length…
While creating a storyboard for your content, one of the first things to consider is the length of your media file. Are you planning on developing a full-length feature? Perhaps an eLearning video course? This factor plays a large role in determining your file size as it is the framework of your content. Naturally, the shorter the duration, the smaller the video size can be estimated to be.
Video Resolution…
Are you after the top of line sharpness level, 8K or 4K? Or are your standards lower for your piece of content? A question you must always ask yourself at the beginning of your project. It’s important to know this before you begin filming as you may need to acquire specific tools to make your content the quality level you want. For example, you may need to purchase specific cameras, editing tools, and transferring software. There are tools available to provide you with multiple resolution options. FileCatalyst solutions allow you to work without limiting your creative flow as you can transfer your supersized video files globally at accelerated rates. Video quality ultimately impacts your video file size through pixels, the higher your film quality the more pixels make up the image. Higher qualities result in larger file sizes, and the larger file sizes result in more difficulties when transferring them.
Video Format…
The format of your video also plays a large role in your video file size. There are two main components to video format, codec and containers. Codecs refer to the process of how the file is compressed and a container indicates how the video file is held together and displays that through the type of file extension it has (e.g. .mov, .mp4, .avi, etc.) There are several complications that can occur if you compress your large video file. Let’s say you produced a two hour 8K video, to make it a smaller video file, you would have to compress the file. In this process, there is a high probability of data loss. The website Video Maker states, “Video compression applications work by looking for redundancies in a frame and maintain them frame to frame. For example, one bit of blue sky is the same as another bit of blue sky. The blue section carries through each frame. At high compression rates, this becomes obvious.”
Solutions that eliminate the need for compression while working on a project are highly beneficial. Your full quality remains intact and transfer wait times are practically non-existent.
Video Frame Rate…

A quick way to analyze the video size you are working with is by knowing the Frames Per Second (FPS). The higher the FPS the better the quality of your video. Below we have shared a cheat sheet we created to assist you with the concept.
For the purpose of our chart, let’s assume a standard frame rate of 25 fps compressed using a BluRay H.264 codec to produce a .mp4 file.
So now that you have an estimate of how large your video file will be, let’s get you set up with an understanding of how long it will take you to transfer it.
It doesn’t matter if you are an enterprise or a start-up, the fact is when producing video files, there are always other teammates involved. When leveraging FileCatalyst products you will have a transparent method of transferring your video files. Before receiving a calculated transfer time slot you will need to know three factors.
1. Distance: How far your data is being transferred
2. Latency: Refers to the delay in transferring or processing data
3. Bandwidth: The maximum transferring rate of a network or internet connection. The combination of how much can be transferred in a specific amount of time
Go to our exclusive FileCatalyst file transfer calculator to receive a tailored time proposal for your video file transfer.
The fact is we are living in the age of advanced technology and image resolutions will continue to grow in quality because people will continue to demand it. Resolution trends will develop because it is a trend and allows for new tools to be created. Supersized video files will always have to be accommodated and hopefully, now you have a better grasp on why they are large sizes, how to estimate your video file size, and what solutions can help you transfer them.
Have we left any of your questions unanswered? Discover much more on how to transfer these supersized video files in our follow-up blog post.

Your Data Is in the Cloud, but How Did It Get There?
As a society, we rely more and more on cloud storage as time goes on. The year 2020 has truly opened our eyes, Bird Box style, to the full potential of the cloud and its importance in the world of technology. Without it, working remotely would be an altogether different type of challenge then it currently is today. When the cloud was developed and eventually promoted to the public in 2006, it wasn’t completely taken seriously. When you thought of the cloud, it was considered an unsafe method of storage and practically useless to the average individual.
Now, it’s a very different story. Cloud storage is as basic as our daily dose of vitamin C, and it’s time that it is shared more transparently, just how your data migration takes place and what you need to accelerate those file transfers.
While the cloud itself is a much safer storage method now than it was when it first arrived on the scene, there are still unsafe access points where your data could be compromised. There are solutions available that will shelter your data as it’s on it’s way to the cloud. It is important to research solution methods that will alleviate the stress of migrating your data into public cloud-based object storage.

The cloud storage options that you will most likely come across first are AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform. These are by far the most popular choices in public cloud storage. Invest in a solution that you know will pair with these platforms or offer you the ability to leverage any other cloud computing platform using a Bring Your Own License (BYOL) model. FileCatalyst Direct integrates natively with these providers as well as others with speeds of up to 5 Gbps. FileCatalyst also offers a BYOL model, per-hour, and per-GB consumption-based billing across various clouds, providing flexible licensing options for short or long-term projects.
At the end of the day, it’s essential to understand that your data needs to be moved in order to be stored in the cloud. One step does not exist without the other. Whether you are in an industry where time is of the essence or you simply just need to establish efficiency within your workflows, a fast file transfer solution is what will help you complete your cloud migration tasks.
Having the right solution will be a game-changer for moving your data to the cloud. Why not select a cloud migration solution that will provide you with features including automation, native cloud storage integration, and an extensive SDK for integrating accelerated transfers into your own applications.
Now that you know how your data is getting to the cloud. The next question is, what are you going to do with that information? Consider your company’s future and save yourself grief and time. Choose the best file transfer solution that will provide you with the flexible licensing options you need and the accelerated transfer speeds to get the job done at the fastest speeds possible.
Caringo Helps Partners Solve M&E Workflow Challenges
Media creators, broadcasters, streaming services, VARs and SIs around the globe trust Swarm Object Storage. Learn how we earned their trust.
Editors and artists strive to produce creative, compelling content while working under the pressure of tight deadlines, shrinking budgets and fierce competition. And, somebody has to make sure that they have the right tools so they can focus on the work at hand rather than being bogged down by technology issues. Finding the right solutions means professionals can focus on content creation rather than fighting with archaic systems that no longer meet their needs.

M&E Workflow Technology from the Post-Production Perspective
I worked in post-production for seven years at two of Chicago’s leading post houses. Following that, I spent the next twelve years at two of the best Systems Integrators (SIs) providing workflow solutions to the post-production and media industry. Throughout those two decades, I saw this technology struggle play itself out on a daily basis. At the time, it seemed to me that there should be some better answers for storage than just SAN and NAS—which tended to be costly and cumbersome, requiring constant and significant new investments to add more storage capacity for organizations that preferred to keep their data close at hand and not in a cold archive (such as tape storage).
M&E Workflow Technology from the SI or VAR Perspective
Both while working in a post-production house and in the SI/VAR world, I sometimes felt like I was trying to land an airplane on an aircraft carrier during high seas and terrible wind conditions. As a Systems Integrator, I was constantly challenged to come up with innovative workflow solutions in a field where technology is ever changing. This required integrating disparate technologies from various manufactures.
For example, I had a broadcast client approach me to rebuild their post workflow. We needed to leverage current infrastructure and add new tools to deploy a workflow to streamline the post process. After careful evaluation, we ended up using Adobe Premier, Telestream, EditShare, CatDV, Storage DNA and a Spectra Logic tape library in their complex workflow.
How Caringo Helps Media Companies, SIs and VARs Simplify M&E Workflows
Now, working for Caringo, I’m pleased to be in the unique position of being able to help solve these dilemmas for both media companies and the SIs and VARs that support them. In fact, we don’t just help them to be more efficient in storing their data, we can dramatically decrease both the acquisition cost and the operational overhead by giving them the power of the Caringo Swarm platform, field hardened at version 11.3. Swarm is trusted daily by media creators and those who broadcast and stream entertainment as an active tier of storage that brings with it additional benefits such as data management and built-in data protection. To learn more about the various tiers of storage, I highly recommend you check out our recent webinar on this topic, 5 Tiers of Storage for New Video Production Workflows: The Sequel.
Helping Media Companies
Caringo can help solve current challenges that many companies who produce media are wrestling with on a daily basis. Here are a few examples of the situations we see on a regular basis.
Is your editorial team working remotely or need to work remotely? Caringo provides an on-premise active archive where every element of a production is milliseconds away with a few clicks of the mouse and accessible from anywhere in the world. Quickly being able to reach into your archive and monetize old content has been crucial to help many companies produce compelling programs. This has been very important to many of our customers as many productions are on hold currently. And, with our Partial File Restore feature, you can clip a large video file for rapid turnaround of a specific portion of a video directly from the archive layer for editing, review and approval, or streaming.
Do you need to add more space to your expensive SAN or NAS? Adding more expensive Tier 1 storage might not be an option, as many companies have constrained budgets. Even if it is an option, would you prefer to redirect some of that money into other priorities? Caringo provides a lower-cost tier of storage enabling you to offload footage and videos that are not currently in production, freeing up expensive Tier 1 storage to do what it is designed to do—edit active projects.
Are you faced with the challenges of having to work in the cloud? Caringo provides an archive platform that can interface with just about any cloud workflow (in minutes), and it meets the highest levels of security set by the Federal government with built-in features such as WORM, Integrity Seals, Legal Hold, Encryption and Versioning.

The Everything-Online Approach for Data and Assets
An everything-online approach challenges the traditional paradigms for storage, with new requirements for intelligent data management and access
As work and workflows become distributed, the way organizations evaluate tier 2 storage is shifting. What we have all learned recently is the importance of making sure everything you create is online, searchable and accessible. I call this the ‘everything-online’ approach. This approach is challenging the standard “speeds-and-feeds” and “cheap-and-deep” paradigms for storage, and is introducing new requirements for intelligent data management and access. Let’s take a deeper dive into what that means and how this impacts your ability to keep everything online.

Scalable Data Management Needs A Centralized Repository
When you are in a distributed environment, a centralized location for data is critical. Having disparate storage systems across your organization is not only difficult to manage from an operational perspective, but it also presents challenges in finding the data you need when you need it. To solve this issue, organizations look to asset management solutions or traditional data management applications. These solutions are able to keep a record of where data is located and offer the ability to tag assets so they are searchable. From a workflow perspective, this is a good start; however, you are still dealing with managing disparate storage systems. And, what about future applications that need to access this data? Will they be able to interface directly with your existing data management applications?
As we move into a world where everything must be online, searchable and remotely accessible, uncertainty is the norm. Meaning you don’t know what data you will need, when you will need it or even who/what will be making the request (user, application or device). By leveraging a tier 2 storage solution with built-in data management capabilities, you cost-effectively supplement not only your storage capacity, but your existing investment in asset management and data management applications. This tier 2 storage can provide a holistic method for searching, categorizing and accessing all of your data. I wrote a blog that details this very topic: How Does Object Storage Facilitate Remote Administration and Workflows?.
The Two High-Level Components to Access
For any method of transportation, you need two things. The first is a road or path of some form and then a method of transport (car, bike, legs, etc.…). This concept can also be applied to transporting and accessing data. The road or path would be the bus, LAN or WAN and the method of transport and access would be the protocol/interface. Both are important from a storage and data access perspective. Historically, protocols/interfaces were developed to access data locally either within a system via the bus or via the LAN. In this scenario, internal networks and the speed of the storage system greatly impact the ability for specific applications to access data. In fact the primary application often manages data access.
Enabling an Everything Online Approach
Now consider the requirements if you need to keep everything you create, all of your data and assets, online. This means that your data must be accessible from any location. In this scenario, throughput, network speed, and the ability to quickly find a file and deliver it over HTTP are the gating factors for enabling efficient access to data. Check out our Tech Tuesday webinar on How Object Storage Makes it Easier to Access your Data from Anywhere for more information.
The Tech Tuesday webinar focuses more on storage than the network (after all, Caringo is a storage company). However, Caringo has an expert in architecting scalable web-based services joining them for their September 24 Brews & Bytes webcast. Philip Mellor-Buckley, BT’s Infrastructure Designer for BT Services Platform, will join Tony Barbagallo, Caringo’s CEO and me to discuss trends in connectivity and services to businesses and consumers. They will focus on the “everything-online” approach. Click here to register for the live event or to watch the on-demand recording.
