Q&A with Spicy Mango’s CTO: Chris Wood

Chris Wood, CTO at software company Spicy Mango, an expert global media technology consulting and software delivery organisation for content owners, broadcasters and service providers, outlines how he started the business, what it means to be an entrepreneur and what his plans are moving forward.

1. How did the idea for Spicy Mango come about?

The idea for setting up Spicy Mango was born out of a few conversations with some old customers and friends: The common theme that emerged was a need for a good platform specialist, one that provided consulting and engineering expertise in back end services.

There are an abundance of product and platform organisations – but they all shy away from custom. Media is a vertical that has a lot of standards as far as video goes, but the rest is really loose – so interoperability is a huge problem at the platform level. This makes building and integrating platforms and products a bit painful.

2. What is unique about Spicy Mango?

There are not many organisations that offer a platform specialism like we do. The market is saturated with front end consumer application development providers – but Spicy Mango is really niche. We design and build globally scaling platforms to bespoke requirements – we don’t have a platform in a box approach. The output is always tailored to the requirements or constraints we are provided.

3. What are Spicy Mango’s long-term goals?

This is going to sound a little unusual, but I don’t have huge ambitions of world domination. We’re very realistic to only bite off what we can chew. So, as long as we keep achieving great client deliverables and have a great time doing it, then long may this ongoing goal continue.

4. How did you build your team?

I’m very lucky being able to hand pick everyone in our organisation. We’re still small so it’s achievable. We started by hiring our now Head of Engineering when I put the company together. We’ve grown based on resource that we need in order to deliver successful projects and support our customers. It’s been very organic. The team all bond really well and it’s a great culture. I’m extremely proud of what every individual brings to the group – the dynamic is very well balanced.

5. How do you build a successful customer base?

The million dollar question…I think we’ve been successful because of our approach. We try to be really realistic, personable and honest. We seek to build long term relationships that are based on trust and transparency. We work hard to deliver against everything we commit to, so when we say we’re going to something – we do! I think that plays a huge part in maintaining a successful customer base.

6. What kind of culture exists in Spicy Mango and how do you establish it?

We’re a really relaxed bunch and we have a great trust culture. I don’t mind where people work, how they work, when they work, so long as everything is done to the time and quality constraints we set. We’ve never had an office – so the whole company has always been remote. We’ve built our culture around really flexible ways of working, and we’re still able to communicate really well day to day. When COVID hit, we didn’t have that crazy panic that a lot of organisations suffered from to transition from an office to home, which was a relief.

Three Media holds the key to unlocking business inefficiencies, in just 30 days

Today’s media world is all about instant reaction and analysis. Live 24-hour news ensures the viewer knows what is happening as it happens. The same should be true for working out better ways to design and run the content supply chains that enable the TV channels, OTT streams and parallel social media feeds carrying the information. To achieve that aim, media consultancy and technology developer Three Media has created a 30-Day Challenge.

This is a new approach to consultancy to align with the industry’s needs. At the start of the pandemic, companies had to introduce change within days and weeks rather than months or years. Companies want to continue to build on this momentum. Gone are the days when they can afford to wait for a long and detailed analysis of their operation. They need an initial assessment of what they can improve on and a measured, focussed strategy or plan as to how to implement the change.

Three Media understands this requirement and using our many years of collective experience is able to analyse a company’s operations and, within 30 days, produce a strategy outline leading to plans that will make a real difference as to how an operation runs.

The 30-Day Challenge involves reviewing live operation or workflows, extracting the existing data and running hard analytical processes, which produce insights that will dramatically improve operations. This is not a quick fix or a generic computer program. Three Media’s simulation modelling is tailored for each scenario, with the results interpreted by our experts to produce a solution that is unique and built around not only the requirements of the company but its nature and personality as well. The data collected is used in real-life scenarios and modelled both on how your business works and how it can work better.

It doesn’t just end there, as the engagement can be extended. Any models built during this 30-day period can be used to further optimise workflows and resources as the implementation phases are introduced. Additionally, Three Media resources can be on hand to manage or support clients through the next steps of any transformation project. Our vast experience enables us to evaluate both business and technical requirements, design or re-engineer workflows, create complex data models and integrate them into overall systems, manage risk and change or oversee tenders and the choice of suppliers.

This consultancy expertise is at the foundation of Three Media, but the insight and understanding gained through this work has been invaluable when designing and developing our own product, XEN:Pipeline. This Business Content Management system is built to manage, automate and optimise all aspects of the supply chain from production to distribution. As with our consultancy services, the mantra of simplify, optimise and deliver, underpins the principles of the product.

Those guiding values have stood us in good stead over the years but now they have been adapted further to create a 30-Day Challenge. By combining our consulting and technology know-how with the latest data-based simulation techniques, we can create a detailed model within XEN:Pipeline, of a client’s operation or workflows and scrutinise them to identify what works and what does not.

The model can cover all or part of the content supply chain and its processing parts. These are examined, together with service-level agreement information, the required throughput, shift patterns and staffing levels. After all this has been loaded into XEN:Pipeline, a baseline run is performed. This identifies errors and warnings in the supply chain and potential faults such as storage capacity problems, transcode queue build-up and delivery flatlines.

Once these parameters have been laid out, the optimisation is set up to run using the artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) engine within XEN:Pipeline. These results and recommendations are then interpreted and highlight where improvements and changes need to be made. Further optimisation will prove the results and provide the blueprint for change.

It is this breadth of experience, understanding of the broadcast market and access to the latest technologies that has made Three Media a leader in the consultancy sector. Now we are pushing forward again with a unique, joint consultancy and product driven approach to analyse a client’s operations and identify where improvements can be made.

Put the 30-Day challenge to the test and unlock the potential in your business.

19” Portable Racks & Enclosures for OB Communication

Our 19-inch SatRack is a lightweight rackmount enclosure specially designed for satellite uplinks and other applications where 19-inch electronic equipment needs to be transported with ease and deployed without damage.

The SatRack is encased in a featherweight, weatherproof, honeycomb PP shell with a ruggedised fabric outer cover for maximum protection, operation and transportation.

The 19" SatRack represents a leap forward in 19" portable rack design that allows high levels of protection for the transportation of 19" equipment as checked airline luggage. This benefits broadcast companies when travelling overseas for events as all equipment can be safely packed up and easily transported.

There are a number of different hurdles that have to be overcome within outside broadcast projects, and at CP Cases one of our specialisms is manufacturing industry-leading equipment that allows you to do this.

Waterproof OB Camera Rain Covers

Our ruggedised Camera Rain Covers protect outside event broadcasting equipment from extreme weather conditions including fast wind and driving rain; perfect for that unpredictable British weather.

From HD to 4K cameras, our custom covers can be specifically designed to protect remote camera heads and all types of camera bodies and lenses. Each cover is designed to provide sufficient internal airflow, and also minimise the risk of overheating by a variety of venting solutions.

Advances in textile manufacturing technology ensure custom designs provide cameramen with free and ergonomic access to controls and connections, without compromising operation and protection.

All of our camera covers can be manufactured in a variety of coloured textiles and be branded to any customer requirements. We also offer transparent pockets for identification labels that can be accommodated to customers’ requests, and we offer a range of accessories which include Over Night Covers and Zipped Storage Pouches for all our covers and shower hoods.

Portable & Rugged Camera Cases

We manufacture a range of standard size aluminium and rotomoulded cases for the film and broadcast industry. These are used widely in OB trucks by large electronics technologies companies. Our aluminium AluCurve Cases and in-house rotomoulded Amazon Cases offer exceptional protection with a modern and stylish finish.

Our AluCurve Cases are manufactured without a corner weld to prevent seam splitting and to give a smooth finish and come with pre pressed corners for extra strength that can be customised and branded with corner ‘smarties’.  Our Amazon Cases are rotomoulded from a high-quality polyethylene polymer that is extremely tough and waterproof; perfect for protection during transit.

Our ruggedised weatherproof rotomoulded cases are designed to securely house cameras and ancillary equipment. All cases are lightweight, transportable and conform to IATA standards. Protective cases can also be supplied with CNC custom routed foam inserts. These inserts are made from the highest quality CNC routed foam designed specifically cut for each individual camera or piece of equipment and can be customised should you need a different configuration in your case; this gives our customers the confidence that their equipment will be completely protected during travel and against the elements.
