Market forces shaping an essential role for smart TVs

As broadcasters face increasing competition from OTT providers for both viewers and advertising dollars, they are adopting aggressive hybrid broadcast-OTT service strategies especially well-suited for smart TVs. However, such an approach requires rigorous content protection across the various delivery networks and requires both DRM and legacy CA systems—a two-silo approach. The good news is that smart TV converged security is readily available today. This allows the operator to replace the set-top box with a smart TV Operator App (OpApp). The result: major CAPEX and OPEX savings for hybrid broadcast-OTT service providers.

Latin America – Business Opportunities

This article is from The IABM Business Intelligence Digest from April 2018. The full report can be viewed here We examine specific trends driving broadcast and media technology spending in Latin America. The trends we discuss are: - Transition to Digital Broadcasting - Transition to HD and UHD - OTT and Multi-Platform Delivery The transition to digital broadcasting is a government-led initiative that has encountered many problems in Latin America. The transitions to HD, UHD and multi-platform delivery are instead natural evolutions of broadcasters’ infrastructures. Transition to Digital Broadcasting The transition to digital broadcasting has only been completed in Mexico, with several countries ongoing. The digital switchover is a lengthy process especially when the region is at different stages of the transition – countries that are ahead with the digital switchover cannot easily re-allocate digital frequencies for mobile use while neighboring nations still use these for broadcasting. The switchover also requires coordination between different parties (government, broadcasters, suppliers, customers) to ensure the smooth transition between analog switch-off and digital switch-over, whilst maintaining efficiency and minimizing issues. This can make it difficult to implement effectively and achieve tight deadlines, especially as each country deals with its own individual economic and political...

North America – Business Opportunities

This article is from The IABM Business Intelligence Digest from April 2018. The full report can be viewed here We examine specific trends driving broadcast and media technology spending in North America. The trends we discuss are: - Transition to Digital and HD Broadcasting - New Viewing Experiences (UHD and VR) - OTT and Multi-Platform Delivery - ATSC 3.0 The transitions to digital and HD broadcasting are mature trends in this region and do not represent significant spending drivers for vendors. The transitions to new viewing experiences, multi-platform delivery and ATSC 3.0 are instead now the principal spurs. Transition to Digital and HD Broadcasting In North America, the transition to digital broadcasting has almost reached maturity and therefore does not represent a significant driver of broadcast and media technology spending. [caption id="attachment_63045" align="aligncenter" width="600"] Source: Digital TV Research[/caption] In the US, the FCC started running tests of digital transmission in 2008. The requirement was set for full-power TV stations to shut down their analog transmissions by June 2009. Low-power TV stations were given an extended deadline of September 2015 and continued to broadcast in analog. However, the FCC suspended this deadline due to the Incentive Auction, which required the repacking...

APAC region Update: An exciting year of unexpected change for all! Peter Bruce, APAC Director

Reflecting on the last year, it has been one of amazing change and contrast for broadcast and media end-users across the APAC region. South Korea became the first country in the world to transmit UHD over the air using ATSC 3.0 – ahead of even the USA. The march towards UHD in Japan, South Korea and, to a certain extent, China is real and now.
