Object Storage Isn’t Just S3 Access

Many in the storage world still have a skewed view of object storage. This really isn’t a surprise given that there are three concepts that need to be defined when talking about object storage, and different storage vendors often have different definitions of those concepts. The 3 concepts are interface/protocol, object structure/system and storage media. In this blog, I am going to focus primarily on interface and protocol.

Swarm 12 Intelligent Data Management for Content Access, Delivery & Archive

As if the data landscape was not already challenging, it became even more so because of COVID-19. With myriad companies suddenly moving to an almost completely remote workforce, the accessibility of files for remote workers was and remains on the critical path for just about every type of business you can imagine.

Fall Leaves & Data Deluges: Selecting the Right Solutions

Every autumn since my 13th birthday, I fall in love. That’s because I live in New England. For about a 6-week span, there is no better place to live. Great weather of cool nights and warm days combined with the beauty of the leaves changing color. It really is the best time to be here…but all that comes with a price. At the same time that I’m falling in love, my hate for the falling leaves grows more and more. Living in New England, it’s a continual battle to deal with the leaves blanketing the lawn. Sure, I can rake up the massive amount of leaves that shed from my trees into piles. After all, it’s cheap and good exercise, but I don’t have the time to spend hours upon hours fighting the never-ending battle. The only way to keep up with it is to invest in the right solution to get the job done in an efficient manner. In this case, it’s using a riding mower and backpack blower to get my lawn clear of the dead leaves.

Why Use a Cloud-Native Approach to Development?

“Cloud-native” is just another way to refer to a native cloud application (NCA), which is a program specifically designed for a cloud-computing architecture, whether that be on-prem, remote or hybrid.

Developing cloud-native applications may not seem like something an object storage company would talk about. But then again, Caringo isn’t just any object storage company—it is an organization that has always been ahead of its time.

Caringo Certification of Western Digital’s Ultrastar Serv60+8 Hybrid Storage Server

In recent years, the industry has seen an explosion of software-defined solutions, not only for storage, but for networking and even the entire data center. Software-defined data management and storage solutions such as Caringo Swarm allow you to deploy in any hardware platform that meets certain requirements or specifications. Recently, I’ve been working on Caringo’s Hardware Compatibility Certification for Western Digital’s Ultrastar Serv60+8 Hybrid Storage line of servers. Thanks to its disk density, build quality and compute power, it is an exceptionally capable platform for managing unstructured data at massive scale. This week, Caringo announced the collaboration with Western Digital to provide a joint solution that enables organizations to manage unstructured data at massive scale like never before—they can now store up to a petabyte (PB) of data in just 4U with 18-TB drives. There are many benefits to this solution, including reduced costs and simplified data management. The solution is particularly valuable for supporting remote access requirements for collaboration, as well as for data mining and monetization of existing assets.

Cloudian – Migrate and Manage Media Assets with EcoDigital DIVA and Cloudian

As modern media workflows accelerate, media organizations are finding that their large tape-based archives can’t keep up with the increased pace. In response, many enterprises are deploying on-prem object storage to keep up with demand, but establishing the right balance between object storage performance and data tape cost is key. To meet these challenges, customers are leveraging the rich metadata and operational analytics of EcoDigital DIVA and Cloudian HyperStore to provide a best-of-breed content management solution.
