Software as a Service is here to stay – It’s the sector that’s predicted to hit well over $600 billion in global value by 2023 (FinancesOnline). Let’s recap – SaaS is the prime method of software delivery, where software and applications are hosted remotely via a vendor. SaaS applications are made available to customers through a network, which often requires a regular subscription to access. Here at PlayBox we’ve championed the countless benefits of truly utilising the cloud with cloud-native SaaS – see Cosmos Technology – and we’re here to share some of those benefits with you.

Andreas Gerlach, Field Application Engineer at G&D, introduces the RemoteAccess-CPU, which lets you integrate virtual machines into existing KVM matrix installation.
Edge Computing for media. Making sense of cloud services
Edge Computing means that media and data are physically located closer to the users who connect to it and use it. Content can be worked on quickly, securely and without latency. Workflows using local machinery such as quality control, edits, transcoders, etc. are still local, but connect seamlessly into workflows and access operated via the cloud, for example multi-point sharing, collaboration, distribution, or delivery workflows. Edge thus means "working simultaneously on the edge of the cloud + in the cloud".
Current Applications of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence in M&E
While the impact of ML and AI have been discussed and debated for years, practical applications are fast accelerating across the media supply chain. The pace of innovation is moving quickly and with the cloud wars in full force, there are new services becoming available all the time that offer novel ways to automate tasks with ML and AI. Already, the big three cloud providers — AWS, Azure, and Google — have rolled out powerful capabilities that help with essential tasks including captioning, transcription, and even object/facial recognition to bolster compliance edits and to augment metadata. For media organizations, the implications of these solutions are vast, and we’ve already begun to see their power. With things moving so fast, though, it’s challenging to keep up and important to have the right architecture and structure in place to take advantage of these innovations.
