CARTONI introduces the UV-C BOXER, a UV disinfection device for video and motion picture equipment

 

Rome, Italy (July 2020) – The global pandemic has impacted the entertainment industry in ways never before imagined. In addition to the need to avoid infected persons, global health experts have warned that the virus that causes COVID-19 can live on plastic and metal surfaces for up to 3 days.[1] The new normal will be a post-pandemic world with an ongoing race to find ways to prevent the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19.

What is UV-C light?

UV-C, or germicidal UV, is a wavelength of UV light, typically between 200 to 280 nanometers, that can inactivate pathogens like bacteria and viruses. UV-C light, in the right strength and dose, modifies the DNA structure of an infectious cell so it cannot reproduce and therefore cannot colonize and spread.

UV radiant energy was first used for disinfecting surfaces in 1877 and has been used extensively, for over 40 years, in disinfecting drinking water, waste water, air, pharmaceutical products, and surfaces against a whole suite of human pathogens. UV-C has been used in hospitals and healthcare facilities for decades and is proven to be effective in both the reduction of hygiene failures and in control environmental contamination by high-concern microorganisms, such as COVID-19. Similar to UV-A and UV-B rays from the sun, exposure to UV-C can damage eyes and skin if overly exposed, so it is essential to follow strict safety guidelines when UV-C devices are in use.

Advantages of germicidal UV

Germicidal UV lamps are incredibly effective and have several significant advantages.

• Pathogen kill rate – All bacteria and viruses tested to date (many hundreds over the years, including other coronaviruses) respond to UV disinfection. Some organisms are more susceptible to UVC disinfection than others, but all tested so far do respond at the appropriate doses. On top of that, bacteria and pathogens cannot become resistant to UV like they can to certain antibiotics and antibacterial products.


• Limited chemical exposure – UV-C works in place of potentially harmful chemicals. It's safe to enter a room after germicidal UV products disinfect the area, but it might be hard to breathe in a room that has just been sprayed down with chemicals.

What is the Cartoni UV-C BOXER?

Studies have shown that environmental transmission of germs and viruses can be unwanted source of illness. The new Cartoni UV-C BOXER leverages the power of germicidal UV to safely sanitize the surface of film and video equipment without emitting moisture, gas or powders.  Equipped with ten medical-grade UV-C (100-280nm) lamps, the BOXER is designed to neutralize any micro-organism, germ, including COVID-19 or mold, which may unknowingly contaminate film and video sets.

Will UV-C irradiation damage the equipment? 

As with prolonged exposure to the sun, which will fade the color of children’s toys on the beach, or most plastics, all UV irradiation can produce some chemical deterioration on plastics, rubbers or polymers.

Although UV-C may discolor plastic and ultimately affect the carbon boundaries of the molecule after extreme exposure of over 1000 hours, UV-C lamps will not deteriorate electronic boards, electrical components, or glass elements such as lenses .

 With this in account, the total irradiation and micro-organizsm disinfection cycle of the Cartoni UV-C Boxer takes just 5 minutes to sanitize each batch of equipment, as metered by a timer.

The newly designed Cartoni UV-C BOXER has a large sliding boxlike container for safe loading and sanitization of multiple pieces of gear at the same time. Like all UV light, exposure to UV-C rays can be dangerous to humans so Cartoni designed the BOXER with a safety lock system to avoid accidental UV-C irradiation.  If the door to the BOXER chamber is not safely locked, the UV-C lamps will not activate.

BOXER is safe if properly used, effective, and fast. Operational indoors and outdoors, it's ideal for carrying to locations by small vans or large SUVs. Equipped with wheels with positive locks, it can easily be moved around on flat surfaces or studios.

What is the UV-C BOXER Advantage?

The Cartoni UV-C BOXER is the only medical-grade UV-C device designed for film and video equipment and is currently being evaluated by the Italian Health Ministry for certification.  The UV-C medical-grade lamps in the Cartoni UV-C BOXER germicidal device has been designed and tested to provide ten times the irradiation needed to sanitize the surface of objects in the device.

The BOXER has 10 Osram/Philips 4watt medical-grade UV 9-watt lamps installed in the chamber. The chamber is covered by high reflection polished aluminum on all six sides, which reflect the UV-C lamp beams in all directions to cover the entire surface of the item to sanitize, including the bottom.11 The power of a reflected beam is 40% of the original beam, exceeding the needed germicidal effect by five times. Each lamp has a life of 6,000 hours and has no ozone release.

 The typical length of time needed to disinfect and sanitize a set of equipment, including a camera, two lenses, two batteries, and one microphone is just five minutes. In order for effective sanitization, the objects must be well arranged and spaced in the BOXER chamber to ensure no overlapping.

The RS 2 uses the DJI Titan stabilization algorithm to provide improved stabilization with increased smoothness. In applications with up to 100mm zoom lenses, a built-in feature called SuperSmooth complements the algorithm by compensating for micromovements and increasing torque to achieve fluid motion (an optional lens support is required).

There are also two RSA ports with electrical contacts for dedicated accessories, and each port has a NATO mount for quick release attachment of these optional accessories. Force Mobile makes the gimbal follow your smartphone's movements. Force Mobile can also be achieved with enhanced responsiveness when you use the optional DJI RavenEye 1080p transmission system. As mentioned, many of these features can be accessed from the touchscreen LCD of the RS 2. When you use the optional RavenEye system, you can also display a live view of your subjects on the touchscreen when using the RavenEye's ActiveTrack feature.

The RS 2 uses a dual-layer Manfrotto plus Arca-Swiss camera mounting system with two removable quick release plates. For social media content, the gimbal can be adjusted at the tab of a button to position your camera into portrait mode. To let you efficiently balance your camera, the RS 2 has an axis lock on each axis, so you can unlock and balance one axis at a time. Additionally, a fine-tune balancing knob allows you to further dial in the optimal balance for your camera.

The gimbal runs for up to 12 hours on a battery cartridge that secures to the included grip handle. The cartridge can easily be swapped out for another one, sold separately. The cartridge is rechargeable via a USB Type-C port on the grip, and the grip can be totally removed from the gimbal when you need to recharge the battery. The BG30 grip is compatible with the PD and QC 2.0 charging protocols. DJI highly recommends using a 24W charger, not included. The battery supports 24W fast charging and can be fully recharged in about 1.5 hours.

The RS 2 comes with a splash-proof carry case designed with dedicated compartments for the different parts of the gimbal and key accessories. The RS 2 gimbal is a redesigned follow-up to the Ronin-S gimbal with a payload of up to 10 lb. It's about 25% lighter and more compact thanks to monocoque carbon fiber axis arms and a shorter grip handle with a smaller battery cartridge, although still with a 12-hour runtime. The motors are about 20% more powerful and support camera and lens combinations including the Sony a7S III with a 24-70mm f/2.8 GM lens, Blackmagic Pocket 6K with a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens, Canon 1D X Mark III with a 24-70mm lens, and ALEXA Mini LF with a 35mm lens.

The RS 2 uses the DJI Titan stabilization algorithm to provide improved stabilization with increased smoothness. In applications with up to 100mm zoom lenses, a built-in feature called SuperSmooth complements the algorithm by compensating for micromovements and increasing torque to achieve fluid motion (an optional lens support is required).

There are also two RSA ports with electrical contacts for dedicated accessories, and each port has a NATO mount for quick release attachment of these optional accessories. One RSA port is provided on the left and one on the right side of the gimbal. Supported accessories include a focus wheel, a twist-grip dual handle, and a universal mount for efficiently attaching the gimbal to a car, jib, or slider.

The companion iOS/Android Ronin app offers many creative features in addition to standard time-lapse and panorama functions. Time Tunnel combines roll motion with hyperlapse to "twist" space and time. Track allows you to create a repeatable camera movement path for a tightly choreographed shot. Force Mobile makes the gimbal follow your smartphone's movements. Force Mobile can also be achieved with enhanced responsiveness when you use the included RavenEye transmission system. When you use the RavenEye, you can also display a live view of your subjects on the touchscreen when using the RavenEye's ActiveTrack feature.

The RS 2 uses a dual-layer Manfrotto plus Arca-Swiss camera mounting system with two removable quick release plates. For social media content, the gimbal can be adjusted at the tab of a button to position your camera into portrait mode. To let you efficiently balance your camera, the RS 2 has an axis lock on each axis, so you can unlock and balance one axis at a time. Additionally, a fine-tune balancing knob allows you to further dial in the optimal balance for your camera.

The gimbal runs for up to 12 hours on a battery cartridge that secures to the included grip handle. The cartridge can easily be swapped out for another one, sold separately. The cartridge is rechargeable via a USB Type-C port on the grip, and the grip can be totally removed from the gimbal when you need to recharge the battery. The BG30 grip is compatible with the PD and QC 2.0 charging protocols. DJI highly recommends using a 24W charger, not included. The battery supports 24W fast charging and can be fully recharged in about 1.5 hours.

The RS 2 comes with a splash-proof carry case designed with dedicated compartments for the different parts of the gimbal and key accessories. A mini tripod is also included and attaches to a 1/4"-20 thread on the bottom of the grip handle to function as a stand or an extension handle for two-handed maneuvering of the gimbal in certain scenarios.

SmallHD FOCUS 7" Full HD Touchscreen Monitor, 1000 nits of Brightness with Teradek Bolt 500 RX integrates Teradek's Bolt 500 wireless receiver with the FOCUS 7 daylight-viewable on-camera monitor. Using the built-in receiver, the FOCUS 7 can receive up to 1080p60 video from Teradek's Bolt 500, Bolt 500 LT or Bolt 500 XT transmitters, or from a SmallHD's FOCUS Bolt 500 TX, with a line-of-sight transmission distance of up to 500'.

 

The included rubberized handgrips and neck strap enable you to comfortably carry the combo unit around the set. An L-series type battery kit, cable clips, matte and glossy screen protectors, and cleaning cloth are also included. Designed with professional monitoring tools, the SmallHD FOCUS 7" On-Camera Monitor is bright, lightweight, and features a sharp 323 ppi display. The 1000 cd/m² bright touchscreen 1920 x 1200 IPS LCD panel is daylight-viewable and supports up to UHD 4K video via its micro-HDMI input. Using the intuitive Swipe OS, you can turn on and save pages of various monitoring tools and focusing aids with a tap.

 

At the rear of the monitor, a dual NP-F battery bay enables you to hot-swap L-series batteries with only one required to power the unit. A 3.5mm barrel DC output can power select cameras with a separately available DC coupler, enabling you to extend your DSLR or mirrorless camera's runtime. A tilt arm is included for mounting the monitor via your camera's accessory shoe or on a 1/4"-20 screw.
